Book Review | Holiday Crafts: 50 Projects for Year-Round Family Fun

Reece's book would make a great Christmas gift!

When I was a kid, I loved do do creative projects. I'd colour or paint or make things for hours every week. As I got a little older, one of my favourite things was looking at craft books from the library to get ideas of more things I could make. I still get kind of excited about DIY books & was pretty eager to review this craft book for kids.

Holiday Crafts: 50 Projects for Year-Round Family Fun features five simple craft ideas for each big American holiday throughout the year. The crafts are fairly simple, using just eleven basic craft supplies, all of which can be purchased at dollar stores for very little money.



It's tricky to give a specific age range for the crafts--I think some preschool age children could do many of the projects, especially with help. Kids as old as nine or ten might like to do them as well. These projects would be ideal for kindergarten or grade one children, for practising fine motor skills. Using scissors, stamping, painting, even some simple sewing/lacing are included. The crafts also involve sorting, mixing colours, counting, & measuring--some really great practise that would be fun for kids who like to craft.

My favourite of all the projects were the Valentine's Day, Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day ideas. My one quibble with the book is that she uses craft foam for nearly every project, which isn't recyclable, as far as I know. However, you could use recycled craft felt or cardboard instead. If you or your child are particularly crafty, this book could also be a great jumping off point. For example, the painted rainbow collage could be done with pieces cut from magazines or simple coloured construction paper instead of painting six pieces of paper to cut up later.

I think this book would make a great gift for the holidays & as the materials used are so affordable, you could buy a set of everything needed to make the crafts as well. It's about $20 online, or $10 for the ebook.
