Ten Things That are NOT in my Purse

This week's Listicles is brought to you by Ducky:

The purse in question
Love the idea! However, it's very similar to a post I wrote on the lovely Erin's blog, for a series she's doing called Every Day Carry XL. (If you want to see what is in my purse, head over to her blog for my guest post.) So I decided to do the opposite & mention things that I don't have in my purse, that maybe  other people might.

  1. A pack of Kleenex. I don't really buy this stuff, we just use hankies or toilet paper at home & the occasional napkin from a cafe.
  2. Makeup. I do have some lip balm & possibly a lipstick in my purse, but I don't wear eye or face makeup much, so I don't carry it with me.
  3. Diapers. I am so happy not to be toting several big, fluffy cloth diapers plus change pad & cloth wipes in a wet bag around with me everywhere we go. I'm not exactly thrilled that we need to rely on disposable training pants; I investigated cloth ones, but decided against it after hearing how not absorbent they are. At least the sposies don't take up as much space in my purse.
  4. A nail file. I am obsessive about having my nails perfectly filed & it drives me nuts when I break one but don't have a file with me. Must remedy this situation soon.
  5. A grocery or To Do list. Unless you count my smartphone. I use a great free app called Evernote to keep my lists & notes of things to remember. Bonus: you can make your lists with tick boxes & tick them off as you accomplish/buy stuff!
  6. A brush or comb. My hair isn't that long & doesn't really tangle, so I find if I need to, I can style it with my fingers. Never felt the need to carry a hair styling tool.
  7. A chequebook. I remember seeing my mom hauling hers out back in the day. I do have one, but it lives at home, getting used only a handful of times per year. Does anybody carry these anymore?
  8. Toys. I don't actually have any in my purse at the moment, but I usually carry around a small car or something to entertain Sprout when we're out.
  9. Tampons or Pads. Haven't used these much at all for over a decade. I use a reusable DivaCup instead--if you haven't heard of it, check out their FAQ.
  10. Small animals. I swear, considering how many crumbs are in there from Sprout's half-eaten snacks, there should be a mouse living in there...

  1. I can't believe you don't have kleenex!! I have at least 3 packets at all time because I hate being caught without any! You are living on the edge!
(My checkbook lives in my purse, but I can't remember the last time I used it when I was out and about)

    1. Ha, I usually find that a flannel or terry cloth wipe does well for most things. I'm not entirely without absorbent materials. :)

  2. There are some serious similarities between the contents, and lack thereof, of our bags! These posts have reminded me that I need to start stocking my bag with things like nail files and notebooks, and also, it's time to start using my iphone for my grocery list!

    1. I'm starting to use my phone for practically everything. I blog on it sometimes, I use all my Google stuff there: email, calendar, documents. I take most photos with it now. Can't remember the last time I used my 'real' camera...

  3. Since Megan started kindergarten and before and after school care? We use the cheque book at least once a week. The parent council activities, fundraisers etc. won't take cash or credit. I ordered more cheques for the first time in EONS! But the cheques are not in my purse:) Or make up but I gave up on the diva and went back to ob and have been very happy with this decision!

    1. Aha, perhaps the ol' chequebook will become useful again once Sprout's in school.

  4. Love the Evernote reference. I'll put it on my list to try : ) Oprah may live in there for a while ha ha. Til next time I clean it out anyways...

    1. Evernote is great because you can also sign in online & use your computer to type stuff out or copy & paste. I have song lyrics on there I used to use for singing Sprout to sleep. I note stuff down for the blog. I used it instead of index cards when I was doing presentations at school. Seriously love Evernote!

  5. Dude. I never used to use kleenex either. When my MIL first came to visit us she was appalled that I didn't have any - she has a fancy tissue holder in every room in her house. It's totally weird. Now I have one. But only ONE!

    1. Wait, are they fancy store-bought tissue box holders, or hand-crocheted monstrosities from a craft fair? Maybe made by knitting beer can pieces together or with layers of dust-catching ruffles? ;)

  6. I love Evernote too - it is great for putting together my classes.

    1. Sometimes I'm shocked at how great some free apps are. & there's not even any adverts in it on my phone! Come to think of it, are there any online either?

  7. I'm sure if I looked closer more closely at the contents I my bag I would find a small animal. Given that it would likely be dead, I'm choosing not to dig too deeply.

  8. I hate that feeling, when you are searching for something way down in the bottom of your purse, and all you come up with are crumbs all over your fingers and under your fingernails!! Another reason to get a nail file in there, huh!?

    1. YES! Oh, God, yes! Crumbs under fingernails are second only to dirt in horrendousness. :)

  9. With the exception of Makeup, I don't have any of the other stuff in mine either. I keep buying little notebooks for my bag, but they never make it in. I'm adding a file right now.

    1. I do have a little notebook in there, but my phone's made it nearly irrelevant. I do find it easier to draw things with a real pen & notebook than my phone, so there's that...

  10. thanks for reminding me...there wasn't any kleenex in my purse dump, so I must be out.
So happy to be done with hauling diapers around too. a spare pair of toddler underwear is much less embarrassing.

  11. A checkbook?! Really? Oh my goodness. Does anyplace take checks anymore?

    1. Yeah, I know. I've no idea where I could pay by cheque for anything but bills. I think there was a brief period in my life where I carried a chequebook around with me--maybe around the time I got my first chequing account?

  12. I just had a flash from the past with the checkbook!
Also, I love the diva cup but always have pads in my purse because if I'm out long enough for it not to be effective anymore I need backup!

    1. I'd never really considered having 'backup'... I guess I live on the edge! ;)

  13. I think that my purse would also be habitable for small animals, once the crumbs start taking over and the smushed packages start breaking open.

    1. I always have a half-eaten granola bar in there--no idea why Sprout won't eat a whole one. Maybe he wants a pet mouse & he's trying to just catch one this way?

  14. Tissues are definitely one thing I SHOULD be carrying too.

I'll have to try Evernote - I'm using an Errands App right now which I really like but I love trying new organizational things. And I keep a grocery list on a dry erase board on the fridge and snap a picture before I head out!!

    1. Evernote does allow you to take pics & keep them in the notebooks, so it would work with your whiteboard system. :) & hey, it's free, so no loss if you don't like it.

I should be getting some kind of commission from Evernote, after all these plugs for it! LOL

  15. Like your spin on this. I have heard much mention of the DivaCup, but still not sure what it is. Must investigate. Ellen

    1. Check it out! It's not for everyone, but I really found it freeing never to worry about stocking up on pads or tampons. Because it's not absorbent you also don't have to worry how long it's in use like with tampons. A lot fewer health concerns with it overall, I'd say. Also, if you do like it, you'll save a ton of money & waste to the landfill over the years. :)

  16. I only have #7 and #9 in my purse.
